J D Fisher opened the first Commercial Hotel on this site in 1853. It was the first two storey building in the town. Fisher sold the premises to T Tanswell who erected the present two storey brick and stone structure in 1873. The Commercial Hotel was erected in 1870/71 for James Kelly, replacing an earlier timber structure first licensed in 1865. This wayside hotel, which was designed by Port Fairy architect, Captain John Mason, is constructed of regular coursed spared basalt to one and half storey height, with a steep pitch iron roof enclosing attic bedrooms lit by gabled dormers. A simply detailed two-storey rendered brick building erected in 1856 on a prominent corner site for Thomas Mickle. The Timor Street frontage was extended in 1869 and the Liebig Street frontage was extended in 1871 for Michael Gleeson, stable owner.
